George Steinbrenner dies at age 80.
If not the game's biggest star, he was certainly the best known owner in sports. For good or ill. As my son said, "He may have been a jackass, but he was our jackass."
With the death of legendary Yankees announcer Bob Sheppard just two days earlier this is truly the end of an era.
