Rudy, Catholics and South Carolina

Professor Bainbridge says that Catholics could probably vote in good conscience for the pro-choice Guiliani, but wonders whether the early South Carolina primary will render the question moot.
I can readily see myself relying on it to support Rudy in '08. Query, however, whether he'll survive the roadblock of the South Carolina primary where his positions on abortion, gay rights, and gun control will be very unpopular. Of course, that just raises the question of whether the state of John C Calhoun, nullification, secession, and treason should have so much influence in the choice of GOP presidential candidates.
