F***ing Firefox, part deux

OK, for the umpteenth time it ate all my bookmarks. This is annoying, but not really a problem, since I now know how to restore (most of) them by using the backup bookmarks folder. But now it's apparently stuck in safe mode and won't allow me to modify my toolbars, add search engines to the search bar or customize it in any way. I've removed the program and reinstalled. Same thing. Any ideas?
