The state of Maryland, in its infinite wisdom, seized my state tax refund. Why? Because I didn't file a state tax return for 2002 and they figure I owe them more than $500. The only problem is I didn't live or work in Maryland in 2002, which I explained to them--in writing--last year when they presented me with the bill.
I'm afraid I was rather harsh to the woman who answered the phone when I called to complain. See, she started getting a little defensive, which only made me more defensive: "Listen," said I, "if you're gonna work for a government agency that make a habit of stealing money from its citizens, you'd better get used to calls like this. Or find another job."
