I have no idea what role Islam, French statism or French racism have played in the riots in France. (Though might I suggest that what most annoyed American conservatives was the press refusal to even hint at the Muslim identity of much of the rioters.) Probably a combination of all of the above, with a dollop of the exhilaration that comes from behaving lawlessly with impunity.
The real question should be: When will the French put a stop to it? Let's hope that declaring a state of emergency, with its enhanced police powers is a step in the right direction.
After order is restored, France can begin sorting out its problems.
UPDATE: What's in a name? Protests indeed.
