Doesn't leave me cold

"Chilling" is how all the TV news reports described Sajida Mubarak Atrous al-Rishawi's confession of her abortive suicide-bombing attempt. That's not how it strikes me: I'm filled with a white-hot rage that makes me want to enable al-Rishawi to experience what she missed by strapping her into a bomb belt and letting it rip.

Perhaps being chilled is the moral response. It certainly provides an insight into how the media views the war on terror. The commentariat is appalled, but at a remove. They don't see al-Qaeda as a threat to them and theirs. Perhaps such a response is a necessary precondition to reporting the news objectively. I don't see it that way. It's that Olympian detachment that I find chilling.
