More pink and grey

We Americans seem to believe in the childish notion that if we take all the proper precautions--eat right, wear our safety belts, practice safe sex--nothing bad will happen to us. Until 9/11, we were able to live in this cocoon because, let's face it, our lives were so easy. We're a society in which our poor people are fat, which is sort of a first in human civilization.

Yet as Whittle points out, hurricanes have occurred throughout human history. And people have died as a result. We're not immune from natural disasters. And if such a disaster occurs, no one--not the president, the director of FEMA or the Joint Chiefs--can wave a magic wand and make the flood waters recede.
