This morning I learn that last night Chris Matthews was addressing the difference between our present War on Terror and World War II. According to Dr. Matthews, this war is "less clear-cut"; there's a "murkiness" because we "don't know when it will end".
Paging Dr. Matthews: In the summer of 1944, as they were moving inland from the Normandy beaches, the Allies' best estimate of when the war would end was sometime in 1946. Maybe even 1947. Even after Germany's surrendered there was still that thing in the Pacific to take care of. And since few people outside the White House or Los Alamos knew of the Manhattan Project, I'll bet to the average man on the street World War II looked a lot less "clear-cut" than it does now, contained as it is between the covers of numerous histories.
