Mommy dearest

A woman whose three-year-old daughter survived her mother's abortion is suing Britain's National Health Service to recover damages for the financial burden of raising her child.

Stacy Dow was 16 when she found out she was pregnant with twins. She had an abortion soon after. After she began putting on weight and missing periods she returned to the doctor.
Miss Dow said: “After 33 weeks I went to the GP and he told me I was pregnant. I thought he meant I had fallen pregnant again, and I couldn’t believe it when I was told that it was one of the original pregnancies.”
...

She said that when she discovered that she was pregnant she didn’t know what to say or do. “When I told my Dad what had happened he nearly crashed his van. I have got a child now that I wasn’t planning to have and I believe the hospital should take some reponsibility for that. It has totally changed my life and my parents’ lives. I wasn’t ready for it.”

She added: “I still don’t know if, or what, I’m going to tell Jayde [her daughter] when the time comes. I just hope she understands what happened and why I did it.”
Somehow I doubt Jayde will appreciate her mother's decision to sue for the burden of raising her.

Via James at Outside the Beltway, who adds:
While one sympathizes with Dow's surprise and the strain an unplanned pregnancy put on her career plans, it's hard to understand a mother suing because her three-year-old is not dead.

The fact that she was pregnant at 16 and just presumed she was pregnant a second time 33 weeks later does not speak well for her, either. "Fallen pregnant," indeed.
