Love the bit about boys & reading. I told my sone I'd buy him anything decent to read. I should have boned up on Stephen King's storylines. My 10-yr-old was reading his books, which I happily bought. YIKES! But he did become a prolific reader in the process.
I bought my son comic books, graphic novels and the Guiness Book of World Records--boys love that. He still isn't much of a reader, though I did all the things you were supposed to do, eg reading him stories every night of his life, blah, blah, blah ...
We tried to read to our kids but neither would sit still. They preferred to read themselves. That's when he entered his Stephen King phase. Btw, my mother is a retired librarian (high school).
Ah, then you come from good stock. Thanks for visiting Kitty!
