Feminist hookers

Laura Vozzella ponders the relationship between women's studies and prostitution in the wake of Brandy Britton's arrest.
A feminist hooker?

"Is there any other kind?" retorts Carol Leigh, aka Scarlot Harlot, a semiretired San Francisco prostitute, "sex-worker" activist and author of Unrepentant Whore.

Leigh sees no contradiction.

"There's always been a link between feminism and prostitution and sex work," she says. "Prostitution has been one of the jobs where women have been able to make more money than men consistently."

The idea that prostitution exploits women, Leigh says, is "informed by an old-guard, mainstream feminist didactic."

With jargon like that, maybe Leigh could make it in academia, too.

More on Britton here.
